The hard work and support of Kingston Rotarians and friends came to fruition on September 16 as the annual Pig Roast came to a close. It was yet another example of the dedication of our six clubs coming together to assist our community in its time of need.
Over the past month, we have been harvesting corn and potatoes from the Robinson Community Garden,
selling tickets for the virtual event and seeking donations to the United Way for the new Community Food
Redistribution Warehouse (CFRW). The students in the culinary program at Loyalist Collegiate Secondary School and the amazing kitchen team at Lionhearts turned that produce and other food donations into delicious meals for people in need. Finally, on Thursday, a group of 10 Rotarians and friends loaded 1000 meals
into vehicles
and distributed them to six agencies including St. Vincent de Paul, Lunch by George, Martha’s Table and the Integrated Food Hub in Kingston, the Amherstview Community Hall and South Frontenac Community Services at the United Church in Battersea. This excellent collaboration of food – giving and other community organizations has been a hallmark of our pandemic efforts.
There were 138 tickets sold raising $2,760. In addition, Rotarians and friends of Rotary donated an additional $3,280 for a total contribution of just over $6,000 surpassing our goal for the event. These funds will go toward the purchase of capital equipment needed for the Community Food Redistribution Warehouse which we expect to officially open in January of 2022.
The pandemic has made us even more aware of the realities of food insecurity in our community. But it is heartening to know that so many people, agencies and organisations have been and continue to do their part to support families.
